CJW Medical Center Earns Cancers Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
Only Hospital in Richmond to Earn Top Honors, One of Only 66 Cancer Facilities in the US
RICHMOND, VA, [July 10, 2008] CJW Medical Center is the only Richmond hospital and one of two in the Commonwealth to earn the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award. The honor recognizes those cancer programs who demonstrate exceptional patient care for cancer patients. CJW Medical Center is one of only 66 hospitals in the country to earn this recognition.
We are very proud to be the only Richmond hospital recognized with the highest national cancer honor, said Steven Castle, Administrator of CJW Medical Centers Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital. We are continually striving to provide the highest quality care for our patients through our Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital. This award demonstrates the comprehensive scope of our cancer program and is a tribute to the team of doctors and staff that provide the highest level of cancer care in Richmond.
Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the Outstanding Achievement Award following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a high level of compliance with standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement).
With 10.5 percent of our patients enrolled in clinical trials, the Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital at CJW Medical Center shows a strong commitment to the most advanced cancer care, said Dr. Sam Graham, Medical Director CJW Medical Centers Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital. This demonstrates that our experienced physicians are participating in cutting edge research on behalf of their patients.
CJW Medical Center is home to the Thomas Johnson Cancer Hospital (TJCH.) Construction is currently underway for a new, state of the art facility on the Johnston-Willis Campus of CJW Medical Center. The goal of the expansion is to consolidate inpatient and outpatient care into one building specifically designed to make cancer services as friendly to access as possible. Patients will go one place to see their physicians and have services. The new building will also house associated supportive resources such as the support groups hosted by the not-for-profit Hawthorne Cancer Education and Resource Center, nutritional services, cancer survivorship, genetics and other screening services, and expanded space for research and clinical trial capabilities. The facility was also designed to support the TJCH serving as a host site to showcase both Varian Medical Systems and Bard Pharmaceuticals latest technologies. The new hospital will open in 2009.
About the Amercian College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and representatives of 40 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
The Approvals Program, a component of the CoC, sets quality-of-care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure that they conform to those standards. Approval by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain approval, facilities with CoC-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
Receiving care at a CoC-approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:
- comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment;
- a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options;
- information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options;
- access to cancer-related information, education, and support;
- a cancer registry that collects d ata on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up;
- ongoing monitoring and improvement of care; and
- quality care close to home.
Through an exclusive partnership with the ACS, the CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoC-approved cancer program. This information is shared with the public on the ACS Web site at www.cancer.org and through the ACS National Cancer Information Center at 1-800/ACS-2345.
